Native Quarter
Watercolor on paper, 64 cm x 50 cm, 2025
The painting Native Quarter reflects the architectural and emotional fabric of Palestinian towns—the organic structure of stone homes, domed roofs, narrow alleys, and clustered buildings that speak of history, community, and continuity. Mansour was drawn to this piece because it aligns deeply with the theme of the project, which evokes memory, rootedness, and cultural persistence.
The title is taken from Tomb’s original exhibition, eliciting a sense of co-existent belonging and marginalization—the notion of being “native” in a space that is yours, yet constantly under threat. This duality is central to the Palestinian experience and to Mansour’s artistic practice.
Sliman Mansour is a leading Palestinian artist whose work explores themes of land, identity, and resilience. With a career spanning decades, he is known for his deeply symbolic depictions of Palestinian daily life, landscapes, and resistance. He lives and works in Jerusalem.
